How can I forgive my cheating boyfriend? |
 My boyfriend and I have lived together for 8 months, and have been together for 1.5 years. He travels extensively for work, and is gone overseas for almost three weeks of each month.
I recently checked his email, and found out that he had slept with a woman in another country for two nights. They maintained contact via e-mail and phone for three weeks before I found out. I even read her text messages on his cell phone. I was so incredibly hurt. He says it was a mistake and he was lonely. He says there is absolutely nothing wrong with me, he loves me and wants to be with me. Why would he maintain contact instead of just having a two-night stand, and should I ever try to forgive him?
 One guess as to why he would maintain contact is that she lives in a city he’s going to return to and that he intended to see her again. Does that mean he has an emotional attachment to her over and above a sexual desire? I can’t answer that, though it’s certainly possible. And another question you have to ask yourself is, is this a one-time affair or has he been cheating on you regularly.
I am not going to tell you that you should absolutely leave him. That’s a personal decision and is dependent on the overall relationship. But one factor that I would look at as being important is if he is going to continue to travel so much for the foreseeable future. If he is, then you’re always going to be worried about what he’s doing, and that is going to be a very uncomfortable situation for you to be in. You can never forget something like this, though you can forgive it. But it’s going to be that much harder to forgive if you know he’s always in a tempting situation, i.e. far from home more often than not.
