| Do Condoms with Spermicide Work? |
|
We are definitely in love & just started having sex in November of 2006, however obviously do not want a child. My question is: Are condoms with spermicide better than just regular condoms? My boyfriend and I use the Trojans with spermicide. And should I be using some sort of contraceptive as well? ps - Good job on 1 vs. 100 last week!
Sorry to report that condoms with spermicides have been found to offer less protection than those without it. It appears that the strong chemicals needed to kill sperm also weaken the condom. Also, the amount of spermicide on a condom is not enough to kill many sperms, so they are ineffective in that way also. Most manufacturers of condoms have stopped making condoms with spermicides because of that.
Condoms do offer a good measure of protection but they are not 100% effective at protecting against an unintended pregnancy. Condoms can break during sex, or fall off, and then people who say they use condoms to protect themselves don’t always use them 100% of the time, further increasing the risk. However, condoms are the only method of birth control that offer a measure of protection against the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, which is why some couples use two methods; a condom and the birth control pill. By the way, because the pill no longer contains as much hormones as before, to protect women from the risk of developing cancer, they are also not as effective at preventing pregnancy. They are still very effective, much more so than condoms, but the risk of an unintended pregnancy is a little higher than it was previously.
