Was I Not Enough To Keep Him Happy?

ImageI had recently gotten back from the desert when I met this guy I worked with.  At the time I didn't know he was going through a divorce. He invited me to dinner and I accepted. I found out he was married and offered to back off until it was final, we had talked about how she had cheated on him and also how she had said she didn't want anything to do with him, hated him, etc....He said that he wanted to continue.

Then his daughter came to live with him. The divorce was proving to be difficult on her and she told her dad that she didn't want him dating anyone, and didn't understand why they couldn't love each other (she's eight). Three days later he broke up with me and told me he was going back to his wife because it was best for his daughter. I know there is nothing I can do however, I feel so confused as to why he would want to go back to someone that made him so miserable! I feel like I did something wrong like I wasn't enough to keep him happy. I know that's not true though and that he would be happy with me. I'm probably just being naive and foolish, but I feel empty now.

Any breakup is painful, and you have to undergo a mourning period for the loss of this relationship, but if in this case he is making the sacrifice for his daughter, then you just have to learn to get over it. This has nothing to do with you. His love for his daughter is making him give up his relationship with you. You, sadly, must get on with your life. So take some time to mourn the passing of this relationship, and then take very firm steps to go out and meet someone new.
