Why do I experience swelling? |

I am a 35-year-old woman that is dealing with a continuous issue. My vagina/genital area swells during sex.
This has happened for as long as I can remember, though at times it swells more than usual. I have asked my gynecologist and she said that she has never heard of it and says that maybe it swells from having rough sex. I have even experienced swelling during the mildest sex act. Any explanation that you can give for the swelling would be helpful.
I’m not a medical doctor, but I can tell you that every woman’s genital area swells when she becomes aroused. Just the way the penis engorges with blood when a man gets excited, which is what causes an erection, the vaginal area also engorges with blood when a woman becomes aroused. So this same effect is probably the cause of the swelling you’ve noticed, though I’m guessing that in your case the swelling is more pronounced, which is why you are asking about it. I’m surprised that your gynecologist didn’t explain this to you. Now if you’re asking only because you are curious as to the cause, then my advice to you would be to accept my explanation and forget about it from now on. If you’re asking because it causes you some sort of discomfort or makes sex more difficult, then I would suggest that you go for a second opinion with another gynecologist.
