Will I always have herpes?
Image
I got genital herpes about two months ago and cleared it up with a 10 day course of zovirax 200mg five times a day. I then went for a check up with my gyn. He gave me the all clear, but he did give me a cream for 6 nights as he said that I had an infection. After that, the herpes came back and I took another 5 day course of zovirax. It went away, but sex is painful.
I'm so afraid that it is going to come back again this month after my period just like it did the last time. What am I doing wrong? Should I go back to the doc? Will it ever go away? Will I always have this pain?

Sorry, but there is no cure for herpes. Some people get it and don’t even know they have it (though they can still spread it). Some people get a few mild outbreaks and never are bothered again (though they can still pass it on). Some people get severe outbreaks. Drugs can control it, and there are drugs you can take on a daily basis that can keep it under control, which you should ask your doctor about, but you will always “have” herpes whether or not you have outbreaks. And you should know that the genitals are not the only place where you can be shedding live viruses. You might have a spot on your thigh or buttocks that is shedding viruses and have no idea, which is why condoms can help keep a partner safe, but are far from 100% effective at doing so.
