First off, can you tell if your boyfriend has masturbated before having sex with him? Let's say, within a couple of days or hours?

You might be able to tell if he masturbated a few hours ago if his penis was a little red. But let’s get to the heart of your question, which is why he would do that. One reason might be because he believes that it helps him deal with premature ejaculation. Many men who can’t control their ability to ejaculate during intercourse believe that if they’re less excited, that they will have more control. And so they masturbate ahead of time. That’s one explanation that I can offer. Of course if he’d learn how to gain better control over his ejaculations, he wouldn’t have to do that, assuming that he is.
As to the second part of your question, I suppose that seeing you do this excites him, but that’s no reason that you have to do it. If you don’t like doing it, then you shouldn’t. Just tell him that you’re not comfortable doing it and if he loves you, he should understand.
