July 3, 2009 - Some Real Fireworks!

America – it’s a fabulous country, isn’t it? High up on my list of reasons why I love living here is fireworks on the Fourth of July! In honor of the celebration of America’s independence, I’m dedicating this newsletter to all things fireworks. So, grab a blanket, some snacks (and possibly a bottle of champagne) and head out for one of these fantastic fireworks displays.

Here's what's happening across the country:

There's nothing more romantic than fireworks sparkling over the Charles River for Bostonians -- except, of course, for a Red Sox win. Boston might be the place to be this weekend, with the annual Boston Harborfest in full swing this week. Saturday, don’t miss the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, with special guest Neil Diamond. Boston.com has a full list of what's happening this weekend.

Down the east coast, New York kicks off its commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the Hudson River with the 33rd Annual Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks. Hailed as the biggest fireworks display in America, fireworks will launch from six barges between 24th and 50th Streets along the Husdon. This is a big switch for New Yorkers, who aren’t used to sharing their fireworks with New Jersey. (Don't worry, Brooklynites -- the fireworks will go back to the East River next year.)

Philadelphia lays proud claim to being the birthplace of this fair nation, and in honor of that, the city is throwing a huge outdoor concert on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Hometown heroes The Roots will get the party started, then Sheryl Crow performs.

Chicago is overachieving, as usual. Tonight, following a concert at the Petrillo Music Shell at 7:30 p.m., the city hosts an Independence Eve Fireworks show in Grant Park. On Saturday, browse Chicago's culinary landscape at the Taste of Chicago, then head to Grant Park and the Navy Pier for the second fireworks show of the weekend. Here is a full list of events at the Navy Pier.

Wherever you may be this weekend, have a fun and safe Fourth of July!
