August 7 - The Secret is Out!

The secret is out! It turns out that you're not the only one with buzzing sounds underneath the sheets at night.

A national survey from Indiana University reports that nearly 53 percent of women in the U.S. admit that they’ve used a vibrator. This is way up from even the 1990’s, when a study by researchers at the University of Chicago found that only 17 percent of women found the idea of using a vibrator “somewhat or very appealing.”

What’s the reason behind the big shift in “vibrator acceptance” during the last fifteen years? The researchers point to two factors: toys are easier to purchase and seen as less taboo to your average female consumer. Once only available in the back of seedy sex video shops, you can now purchase a toy online, which is always good for the sheepish and shy among us! Vibrators packaged as "personal massagers" are even available at general retailers like Wal-Mart and Target.

So, which age group is leading the pack? Almost 60 percent of women ages 23 to 44 reported having used a vibrator at some point in their lives, versus only 33 percent of women ages 18 to 22. (Oh, the follies of youth! Get thee to to immediately!)

It seems that women who pay attention to themselves in a sexual sense also pay more attention to their gynecological health. The researchers found that women who used vibrators were “significantly more likely to have had a gynecologic exam during the past year," and that's always a good thing.
